Ultrasound Tissue Characterisation (UTC)

Hamilton Equine Veterinary Practice is one of the only equine veterinary practices in the UK to offer Ultrasound Tissue Characterisation (UTC).  UTC is an advanced diagnostic imaging technique which utilises cutting-edge ultrasound technology to deliver a detailed analysis of soft tissue structures, tendons, and ligaments.  This has transformed how injuries are diagnosed and managed, optimising patient and client outcomes.

Ultrasound Tissue Characterisation (UTC) utilises pioneering ultrasound technology to deliver a detailed analysis of soft tissue structures. Unlike traditional ultrasound, UTC enables a thorough three-dimensional evaluation. This method carefully examines the echo patterns within soft tissues and converts them into color-coded images that depict various types of tissue integrity and abnormalities.

Ultrasound Tissue Characterisation (UTC) has transformed the way tendon and ligament injuries are diagnosed. Its precision and in-depth analysis provide a level of understanding that traditional imaging methods could never achieve.

Due to the highly detailed information provided, UTC can be used to effectively:

  • Identify changes within tendons and ligaments at a very early stage.

  • Characterise chronic changes within tendons and ligaments during training.

  • Diagnose and evaluate acute injuries.

  • Monitor healing closely during the recovery process allowing development of a customised rehabilitation programmes.
